The Anagrammy Awards Results - January, 2007

Sorry about my lateness in publishing the results for the latest competition and for my lack of activity on the Forum. I seem to have been so busy with running three competitions in the last 5 weeks and also I have been involved in many other non-Anagrammy activities.

As so many of you have said, "What a month!". Indeed, it was a month of many new records:

  1. Just over 2100 posts to the Forum, where 1400 would normally be considered a very busy month. Many thanks to our keen newcomers, especially Adie Pena (328 posts), and our regulars, Andrew (330), Rosie (287), David and Tony (173 each), Paul (170) and Mike (144).

  2. We had a record number of nominations, too, with 306, smashing the long-standing record of 234 set way back in December 1998!

  3. Andrew also shattered the Jesse Frankovich's record of monthly noms (43 noms in August 2003) with a new record of 64.

Thank you all for your participation and to the moderators in helping out with the day-to-day monitoring. I have modified the Forum script to block much of the nuisance spam.

The number of voters, however, did not go up with the increase of member activity. 45 voters was a reasonable result, but 50+ every month would be better.

This month, nine members shared 16 awards.

GENERAL:

Rosie was the early leader, five points ahead of Mey at the 12 hour mark. Mey overtook her and had opened an eleven point margin by the end of Day One. On Days Two and Three, Mey was 16 points clear for a very comfortable win. Rosie was always going to pick up second place, but the battle for third place was, as usual, very close.

Tony, Hans-Peter and Andrew shared third at 12 hours. Hans-Peter was one point ahead of Andrew by 24 hours. Andrew, Neil and Hans-Peter were tied at 48 hours. Hans-Peter dropped off the pace on the last day, leaving Neil and Andrew to share the third place award.

Andrew's third place award give him 12 awards all-up. Neil's award was his first Anagrammy. Congratulations, Neil.

ENTERTAINMENT:

This was one of the closest categories this month.

Horrid took a small lead after 12 hours and was just point ahead of Tony at the end of Day One. At Day Two's end, they shared the lead, and they were tied again at the end of the comeptition. That looked that would be the final result, until I discovered a duplicate vote. When that was deleted, Tony had just made it home by two points.

PEOPLES NAMES:

Another very close event.

Paul was a clear leader at the 12 hour point, being 8 points clear of Mike. He remained in the lead after 24 hours, three points ahead of Mey who had moved up from 4th place. The final two days saw Mey and Paul see-saw for the lead, with Mey beating him by one point.

OTHER NAMES:

It was nice to see a new member (and a fellow Mac user) win here.

Adie shot to lead and was clear by eleven points after 12 hours. Horrid challenged well, narrowing Adie's lead to just three with 24 hours to go. Adie polled well near the end to win comfortably by seven points.

Congratulations to Adie on his first Anagrammy. I am sure we will see more wins for him.

1

MEDIUM LENGTH:

This was also quite close and the leader for the first two days missed out.

Andrew was always just 2-3 points ahead, until the Final Day, when Rosie jumped up and won by four points.

Two wins for Rosie take her to 11 on the All-Time Table.

AWARDSMASTER'S CHALLENGE:

This month's Challenge, set by David, was to create a new epitaph about another person, using this text:

Swift's Epitaph by William Butler Yeats

Swift has sailed into his rest;
Savage indignation there
Cannot lacerate his breast.
Imitate him if you dare,
World-besotted traveller; he
Served human liberty.

Mey was one of the last to post his reply to David's Challenge and it was worth the wait.

Mey had quite a modest lead on Day One, but powered on as the competition progressed and won easily by a dozen points.

Poem at Steve Irwin's burial

This still Aussie, there he lies
After a marine demise.
Swiftly did that brat depart
When that stingray stabbed his heart.
May you win eternal love -
Lifting crocodiles, above!

  Richard G

Damn thing's a bit similar to a tiny wreath-fanfare that was scribbled by verbalist W.H.Auden:

"Earth, receive an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel lie
Emptied of its poetry."

3

  Rosie Perera

24

No more derby racing, eating hay --
It was frail Barbaro's last day.
The needle slid swiftly into his vein;
The vet said it was ethical, humane.
Rider wept: "'Slept?' It's sure a shame."
But to live is bitter for the lame.

  Horrid Stretchy Pus

24

Earth's Epitaph by God

I blame myself.

Seven days:
I design it to last forever
I erect it.
I breed lunatics in the asylum!
What is left to show?
A terrible, horrible waste.
Man,
What a vandal.
It's his nature

I tried

Tony is hard to beat in this category nowadays and this month was no exception!

SPECIAL:

Mey was always looking good here, but David was in contention with 2nd and 3rd place over the first two days.

Mey ended up winning by half a dozen points, with David picking up the second place award and Tony moving one of his into third place on the last day.

Mey had another excellent month with five awards, taking him to 284 in total. David's win was his 95th and I can see him catching up with me and getting into 3rd place on the All-Time Table during this year. A good month for Tony, as well, with three awards. That gives him 57 all up.

AWARDMASTER'S AWARD FOR THE BEST ANAGRAM OF A NON-WINNING AUTHOR

Two serious contenders stood out for this award: Hans-Peter's General, which I thought was very clever, and Paul Pan's Peoples Names, which very nearly won. A tough choice, but I ended up with Paul's short one.

Paul Pan with:
Tony Blair's ~
a sly Briton!

Paul has now won 16 awards.

Congratulations to all the winners. Thank you all for voting.
