What was the origin of the Anagrammy Awards?

It started off after a suggestion in the newsgroup, alt.anagrams, in March 1998 that there be an Anagram of the Month Award. The idea for an award was very well received by the other newsgroup regulars and was directly put into action.

The name "Anagrammy" was chosen because of its similarity to the Grammy Awards. Richard Brodie registered the www.anagrammy.com domain name, Dave Linabury designed the graphics for the award, and Herman Hiddema (Shimrod) became the Anagrammy Awardsmaster.

Herman also started collecting nominations and votes, and publishing the results in alt.anagrams. Voting was open for two weeks.

The first Anagrammy was presented in March 1998, the month it was conceived, in the General Category only, and was given to Richard Brodie, who took a phrase from an article on anagram research and created this brilliant anagram:

"Relatively knowledge-lean domains" = "Well, look, I evidently need anagrams."
