OCTOBER
by Robert Frost

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow's wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes' sake, if the were all,
Whose elaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost--
For the grapes' sake along the all.

Forefathers hear my voice as
I bless nuggets that were cast.
Like folks before me,
I see books of the past.
Photos tell about aches,
I dream of a better now.
New blood fills the instant;
Old age lines the brow.
As faultless and bowed
Memories will follow me...
Engaging the heartbeats
Remember to be free.
I long for a mother's country
Cradled in my fallow love,
Anchored deep in her roots,
Nurtured by the sun above,
"How full was my heart?"
I hear the subtlest call.
Soon forgotten, look ahead...
The shadows grow so tall.
Oh, the awkward thoughts
Return to my youth.
Yesterday is forever lost;
My future is the truth.
On the edge, beyond the sea
Never near, always far.
Traditions will remain...
Home is where we are.

LEAVES

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.

NATURE'S WAY

Outside that clear window I see
Change in that natural tapestry.
Hue thrust from a withering green,
Lovely tho' to be touched or seen.
Orange with brown and yellow;
Red and that rust so mellow.

Oh, thrilled to get that better look,
Picking my tattered sketchbook...
Hope I'll capture that new scenery.
Yesterday's hard truth exists in me --
Lonely he'll end in the Fall.
Listen, I hear North Winter call!

The anagram is an acrostic of the author of the subject text, R. Lee Frost.

NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,

Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

REGRETS AHEAD

Life has no strength,
Easier effort nor length.

Ebony-shrouded afternoon,
Fall was dealt so soon.

Rotting ballads unsung,
Older ideas and the young.

Seconds though of the day
Ticking so slowly away.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
OF PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD-WILL TO MEN!

Accord has dipped, deteriorated?
Old hostile wars are escalated?
Then this immortal line
By a pal of mine --
A HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW.
