The Anagrammy Results for July 2003

37 voters in this month. It might have been a little more, as few regulars did not get a chance to vote. Is four days too short? There was an increase in the number of lurker votes, which is always nice to see. This month's awards were quite evenly spread over the field. There were a few landslide wins and a couple of close categories.

General Category - 1st three win an award. 12 entries this month, Jesse's entry was the clear starting favourite and took an early lead, which he maintained to the end, beating Zoran by 10 points. The real battle was for third place, with Paul, Scott and Wordminer never more than 3 points apart. Paul finished well to get third by just one point. Jesse's win is his 6th; Paul now has 8 awards; Zoran has had 12 wins, moving up to 13th place of the All Time Table.

Entertainment Category This was a close event until the last day. The standard here was very good. For most of the contest, it was very close between David Green and Scott. However, Scott dominated the last day's votes to jump ahead for a ten point win. Actually, Scott had two very good nominations in this category, the other being his Moonlight Sonata anagram. Originally I chose that one for the final list, but Richard talked me around to the Chopin, which was a good decision for Scott.

Topical Category There were really only two contenders here in this competition. While Scott always had the lead over Jaybur after a very strong start, the final margin was just two points. Great month for Scott with two closely fought wins this month. He has won a total of four awards.

1st Scott Gardner with: Algiers earthquake = Quite a large shaker. 61 2nd Jaybur with: The anniversary of Everest climb = Men relive bravery of this ascent. 59 3rd Larry Brash with: The medicinal uses of marihuana = Me? Inhale to cure AIDS? Uh... as if, man! 23

Rude Category This was a landslide win for Adrian. Adrian's entry stood out at the start of the contest as a likely winner, but the size of the win was still somewhat unexpected.

1st Adrian Hickford with: She's performing fellatio = Offering her lips to males. 58 2nd Mey Kraus with: Sexually Transmitted Disease = Elementary, as I dated six sluts! 29 3rd Hans-Peter Reich with: Morning erections = Erotic men, snoring. 26

Peoples' Names Category Another big win to Adrian! His entry was another clear favourite with the voters with a massive 40 point win. Adrian's two wins this month, give him eight for this year and 33 all up.

1st Adrian Hickford with: Admiral Horatio Nelson = A national hero, milords. 64 2nd Zoran Radisavlevic with: Achilles = Hellasic! 24 3rd David A. Green with: The Colombian drugs trafficker Pablo Escobar = Cartel boss: he'd grab a profit from bulk cocaine. 22

Other Names Category As if he was not happy enough with his win in last month's Challenge using the SARS subject, Richard found this even better anagram for a strong win here. I was very happy with my second place here.

1st Richard Grantham with: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome = Uproar over recent mystery disease. 63 2nd Larry Brash with: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome = No curing of my tired aches. 43 3rd Jaybur with: The Association for the Study of Obesity = So fat is bad, then: our society is hefty too! 24

Medium Category Five entrants this month, indicating an increase in interest in this length anagram. I was happy with my entry here, but I thought that Mey would be the most likely to win. However, people seemed to appreciate the difficulty that is involved anagramming from one language to another. I opened with a handy lead on Day One and maintained it to the end. This was my third win this year and advances my All Time awards to 70.

1st Larry Brash with: Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega. = I'll aim to applaud this amazing Greek alphabet. Text, in common use, might appear as: "euthanasia", "utopia", "phobia", "diploma", "coma". 74 2nd Mey Kraus with: When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President; I'm beginning to believe it. (Clarence Seward Darrow) = Once considered it wry babble, but God, I swear - now that I'm in power, I can only admit it's a well-observed adage! (Cheney). 54 3rd David A. Sutherland = I gather it's full of enormous snakes and various awful, dreaded critters that bite you in anus. 48

Long Category Another quiet turnout here with just two entries. People seemed to gravitate to either the Medium Category or Special Category. Jaybur took the lead and kept in throughout, winning by six points. This was her 45th win ever and she moves up a position on the All Time Table to equal fourth.

Special Category - 1st three win an award. The standard here was a lot higher this month. It was no surprise that Richard and Mey were the main two contenders, Mey always kept a modest lead. David Bourke and I had a good contest for third with neither getting more than three points apart. Mey's win give him 15 for this year and 123 all up. Richard's wins give him 120 wins. David's award was his 41st and moves him up to equal 6th on the Table.

The Anagrammy Team's Choice for the Best Non-winning Anagram This was a fairly easy choice this month. The main contenders were Wordminer's General, and David and Jesse's entries in Entertainment. We both easily agreed that David's Entertainment entry, which led for some of the contest, was our choice. David A. Green with: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre = A man with axe chases actress. This was David's 13th award.
