Nom for the second one, triumphant work as always David. :)

44 letters makes this a straddler... I'll leave it in Long for now, while we clear up what's going on with the categories. Ent isn't out of the question, though.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory = Corelate all in a roar of baryonic matter. -- Wayne Baisley, 15:03:02 10/06/02 Sun

I'm rather pleased with this one, as it's very apt. At
the Lab, we take protons and antiprotons, baryons by
virtue of having 3 quarks/antiquarks apiece, and smack
them together at nearly the speed of light, hard enough to
produce all other quarks in the standard model, plus jets
of almost everything else, excepting the Higgs boson (so
far). The 3rd generation of quarks (top and bottom, or
truth and beauty for you oldtimers) was confirmed here,
completing the predicted population. Anagrammicity is
conserved, too, it seems.

Thanks, Janet!

Now here's one for all you scientists, philosophers, and
politicians out there. It has to do with when you've
decided that you have enough data to publish a result.
If the error bars are too big, there's too much wishful
thinking and uncertainty. That was a concern back in '95
when the first Top papers were published. Some felt that
it was premature. But that's all past now, with more data
confirming the early hints.

Cool, analytic lie? A matter of an error bar!

The debate sure surprised me! I meant the anagram to be "playful", which I think it was, so I didn't expect a grammar lesson to ensue.

Thank you; and as for the grammar... well, I earned sub-C marks in English back in my school days, so I'm surely no authority. Usually, I succeed by constructing my sentence so they sound "right" (to me).

Larry selfnommed his in time for the Sept list, but this one would normally go into Oct. We can slip it into Sept if you really want, but there's not much point because Mattias already has noms to fill both Entertainment and People's Names (both currently listed in Ent IIRC). Hope this is OK.

If you have more than one NOM in a category (except Special), please email me your picks for the final list.

I must say that I am impressed with the number and quality of the anagrams this month. KUTGW, gang.

Lets try and get as many voters as possible. Mention the competition to your friends & family, but ask them to vote fairly, not just for your's.

I hope to have the competition started in about 48 hours at the latest, so get those selections in soon as possible.

We don't have a strict rule about this, as the single-selfnom stipulation was brought in specifically to counter the practice of selfnomming half a dozen or more borderline 'grams right at the end of the month (that invariably went on to be ignored both in the selfnom post and at voting time). Ones that *do* get seconded are a different matter, so in the unlikely event that no one seconded this we'd have let it through with maybe only the briefest of tut-tuts. :)

We *could* make this offical, "maximum of one unseconded selfnom per month" or something, but that's starting to get ridiculous. As long as an exception is within the spirit of the rules, we don't need to spell it out in the letter of the rules.

I had it set for 10 seconds originally, but Richard and I agreed that 5 seconds is better. I'll slow it down if everyone wants.

Captain Ahab's War On Obesity -- Mey K., 03:42:13 09/30/02 Mon

Below is a poem from Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", dealing with the fate of the obese child Augustus Gloop. Whale associations brought me to anagram it in the spirit of "Moby Dick", with a somewhat
gloomier theme.

Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop!
The great big greedy nincompoop!
How long could we allow this beast
To gorge and guzzle, feed and feast
On everything he wanted to?
Great Scott! It simply wouldn't do!
However long this pig might live,
We're positive he'd never give
Even the smallest bit of fun
Or happiness to anyone.
So what we do in cases such
As this, we use the gentle touch,
And carefully we take the brat
And turn him into something that
Will give great pleasure to us all -
A doll, for instance, or a ball,
Or marbles or a rocking horse.
But this revolting boy, of course,
Was so unutterably vile,
So greedy, foul, and infantile,
He left a most disgusting taste
Inside our mouths, and so in haste
We chose a thing that, come what may,
Would take the nasty taste away.
"Come on!" we cried. "The time is ripe
To send him shooting up the pipe!
He has to go! It has to be!"
And very soon, he's going to see
Inside the room to which he's gone
Some funny things are going on.
But don't, dear children, be alarmed;
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed,
Although, of course, we must admit
He will be altered quite a bit.
He'll be quite changed from what he's been,
When he goes through the fudge machine:
Slowly, the wheels go round and round,
The cogs begin to grind and pound;
A hundred knives go slice, slice, slice;
We add some sugar, cream, and spice;
We boil him for a minute more,
Until we're absolutely sure
That all the greed and all the gall
Is boiled away for once and all.
Then out he comes! And now! By grace!
A miracle has taken place!
This boy, who only just before
Was loathed by men from shore to shore,
This greedy brute, this louse's ear,
Is loved by people everywhere!
For who could hate or bear a grudge
Against a luscious bit of fudge?

=

Elusive whale! Elusive whale!
Score meters long, from head to tail!
How perfectly the moonlight shines
On your gargantuan design.
No girl could match the Big Blue ring's
Most glorified, gigantic king...
Your bulbous top, that wrinkled brow -
I've followed them for decades now.
I often long on midnight struts
To chop you up and spill your guts;
To watch your fleeting, anguished death,
Your blow-hole freeing one last breath;
To see that bulging, wicked gaze
Receive an apathetic glaze..
I know that Queequeg, Pip and such
Do not appreciate me much;
"Obsessed", they giggle when I'm 'round,
"Mere 'Jonah' goose who'd like to drown";
These fools suggest beluga whales,
"Some gorgeous creatures... great to trail."
They'll never understand this wish
To catch one godless beast unleashed;
Raw appetite on which I thrive,
Huge waves I ride to feel alive:
A need of Nemesis, so pure
No mariner has found the cure.
Across the globe, against all odds
I'll fight the winds and daunt the gods;
And, on a wretched whalebone peg,
Demand revenge for one lost leg.
Oh, even as I sense you're near,
The deadly struggle feeds no fear -
I've fought so many deep-sea breeds,
(The biggest, strongest ones indeed),
That every ocean giant will
Be happy to call me his meal;
If Satan would come down to earth
To value cunning as his worth,
I eagerly assure you that
It will be mine he'll marvel at...
The only thought that might bring some
Concern, though, is: what would become
Of Ahab once he reached his goal?
What road to choose, without a role?...
But idle issues shan't upset
My mind, now that your life's in threat.
Aboard this boat awaits your tomb,
And on my table - lies your doom,
As who could possibly resist
A sumptuous, wholesome blubber feast?

P.S. Two additional anagrams relating to "Moby Dick", one more obvious and the other a little less, were planted in the anagram. Enjoy! :)

Mey K.
